Studio Progress: 24 Hours Later....
Yesterday I shared that I was going to go bold or go home and paint the focal wall of my studio in a deep gray, Intellectual by Behr. As a reminder, here is what I started with....
After I got done hitting publish on my post yesterday morning, I went straight to the studio and started painting. No turning back. Let's do this!
One coat later....
Holy bananas! It was suddenly a completely different space. Like 100% in yo face different. So dramatic. So intense. So scary fun. My instagut told me I loooooved it. And I would find myself running back into the room to gaze and oooh and ahh.... Amazing what a quart of paint can do.
Two coats later and it was done! With the exception of some touch-ups of course...
Some things to note:
I am so happy I took a risk and finally just did something down there! It wasn't what I initially envisioned or planned, but I am really happy with how it is all playing out. Finding that swatch and looking at inspiration photos really gave me the push I needed to do something bold and different and take a risk from my original plan. And that pink craft cart paired with the new gray makes my heart swoon. I also love that it works so well with other bright and bold colors, which I definitely will have plenty of as I start bringing in storage and accessories.
24 hours later and the studio is a whole new place! Here is a quickie before and after of the dramatic difference the paint made.
Now I am even more excited to keep pluggin' away to get this space up and running! Here is a list of things still on my studio "to do" list:

Some things to note:
- We added a new cap to the cabinets to extend them all the way to the ceiling {post on that coming soon}.
- The upper cabinets are getting new shelves. They originally came with one. Half the reason I didn't like the initial storage is because one shelf wasn't enough. We are making our own shelves to add a second one to each cabinet.
- The cabinet doors are also white. Once we install the white shelves and doors, it will break up the gray in the backs of the cabinets. I am contemplating leaving the middle door off, but we will see how it all looks as we go.
- The white is such an amazing contrast to the deep gray, it's so nice and crisp.
- The gray will act as a sophisticated and bold backdrop to all of the accessories and storage that will come in next.
- I updated the lighting in the studio to three daylight bulbs, and that made a world of difference. I was really, really concerned that the deep gray would be too "heavy" and the space wouldn't be able to accommodate the update. But amazingly, all of the white cabinets, counter and other light furniture really balance it and the room still feels nice and bright!

- Install shelving
- Install cabinet doors
- Install cabinet hardware

- Hang art
- Recover thrift store chair
- Officially move back in and enjoy the space!

Bringing Intellectual into the Studio!
I took a quick shopping trip to Home Depot this weekend and ran across a paint swatch that stopped me in my tracks. Not only did I find the name fitting for my studio space... Intellectual, but I also fell truly madly deeply in love with the deep and bold color.
Boy do I need all the intellectual help I can get! So whether or not painting the focal wall in my studio in this color is an intellectual choice or not, only time will tell. First coat is going on the walls today! And although I have a huge fear that the room is too dark to host such a bold color, it's only paint I say. Risks need to be taken. And I have gazed and contemplated that focal wall for over a year and I finally just need to jump on it, follow my gut and see what happens!
As I was wavering last night, I decided to pull up some inspiration pictures to help me through it. This is something I always recommend when contemplating a decision. See if you can find some examples of where it works well. Here are a few super dark gray {some almost black} walls that I found to be super motivational in my decision making process:

I am planning on bringing so many colors into the space, I think the dark gray will really keep some sophisticated balance that I am looking for. And if not, why, it's just paint after all!
Anyone else in loooove with the dark gray/black craze? What item or project have you been sitting on in which some inspiration pictures pushed you over the edge and made things happen?
Stay tuned, fingers crossed I will have an update for you this week!

Hooked on Hooks!
I think I have put hooks up in almost every room in our home. Entry off of the garage? Check. Main entry? Check. Bathroom? Check. Kid's bedroom? Check again!
I have been majorly lovin' on the rail of hooks we installed in the boy's shared bedroom. They are the perfect place for us to hang their overnight bag when packing it, put out long sleeved sweaters for chilly days and even hang their p.j.'s in-between wears.
First, we attempted to be resourceful and installed a rail of hooks from when my oldest was a wee one, and it was much too small and not at all effective...
Sometimes bigger is just better. What we had initially just was not at all substantial and looked a bit funny on the wall when the door was closed. The hook system didn't make much sense because the knobs were so close together, you really could only comfortably hang one or two things, even though there were four hooks.
Mark this down as one of those super-speedy-super-awesome DIY projects. And unfortunately, you are just going to have to trust me on that, as this smart and oh-so-organized girl {enter sarcasm here}, managed to misplace all of the photos I took of the install process. I searched for over two hours this morning and I had to finally throw up my hands and be OK that sometimes words just have to be enough. Of course I will update the post the day I find those pesky pics, I am sure I will stumble on them in some random folder three years from now, although, I did have fun getting sucked down memory lane while I searched endlessly on my external hard drive this morning. Rant over.
Back to the rail of hooks install process...
Step 1: Measure desired space.
Step 2: Purchase rail board. We went with a board that was 6" wide and already primed, found at Home Depot.
Step 3: Using a brad nailer to affix the board to the wall, my hubby tried his best to hit studs. We installed the board 34" from the floor, we wanted it to be tall enough so clothing wouldn't touch the floor, but short enough for the kids to easily access.
Step 4: Fill nail holes with caulk.
Step 5: Paint.
Step 6: Once paint is dry, install hooks {I found the hooks at Home Depot}. We spaced them evenly and just screwed them right into the wood board. The wood gave the hooks the strength needed to hold a decent amount of weight.
I am over the moon happy about how simple and quick the project was, and how well it utilized the space behind the door.
The kids have a bit of a traveling/airplane theme going on...
So I ordered these awesome prints from the Honey & Fitz Etsy shop.
They fit the room like a glove, and I adore listening to my boys chat airplanes.
I am so smitten with the impact and the ease of this project. A round of applause to hooks for being simply awesome.
Aside from hooks, I am currently hooked on Instagram, sunshine, fresh flowers, bad reality television, my morning cup of coffee, touches of gold, my fam and Essie nail polish color turquoise & caicos. How about you, anything you are hooked on that we should know about?

UHeart Organizing: Travel Tips that Pack a lot of Punch!
Spring break must have brought out the travel bug in everyone, because it's been a hot topic lately, which I looove. I shared earlier this week how we have decided to keep the car stocked when traveling with the kids. And today, Chelsea, from Two Twenty One, is here to share how she packs her suitcase, with all sorts of savvy tips and tricks that anyone can use!

"Hey friends! I'm Chelsea from Two Twenty One! I'm a twenty-something living in Indiana with my husband, Brad, and our crazy mutt, Jack. My loves are photography, travel, DIY projects, baking, wine, sarcasm and my iPhone. The husband and I are attempting to make our home a little less cookie cutter and a lot more awesome. My little slice of the internet, Two Twenty One, is where I share my latest home improvement projects, furniture makeovers, crafts, recipes and home & seasonal decor ideas. I am beyond excited to join Jen and the rest of the IHeart Organizing team!"
Hey, IHeart readers! I don't know about you but I've never been known as a light packer. It seems that every time I fly I let out a "yesss" when I put my suitcase on the scale at the ticket counter and it weighs in at 49 pounds. Today I'm sharing some packing tips and tricks with you to stay organized while traveling and maximize the space in your suitcase.
Let's start with toiletries. I use two different travel toiletry bags my in-laws gave me a few years ago. One bag is for my morning and evening products-- contact solution, contact case, eyeglasses, face wash, moisturizer, eye makeup remove towelettes, floss, etc. The other bag is for my hair, shower, and miscellaneous items-- wrinkle release, lint roller, antacids, static remover spray, shampoo, conditioner, razor, hair gel, hairspray, etc.
Tip: I use empty prescription bottles for my shampoo and conditioner. Why waste money on the little travel size bottles? If needed, label the bottles with a permanent marker.
I also have a jewelry organizer. Because let's face it, it's always hard to decide which accessories to bring on a trip. A girl needs options.
Tip: Keep your necklaces with thin chains from tangling by stringing each necklace through a drinking straw. You can kind of see how I did this with my anchor necklace near the bottom of the photo.
I keep my longer, more intricate necklaces protected and organized in a rolled up placemat, tied with a piece of ribbon.
Read more about my DIY roll up necklace organizer here.
I love this little undergarment pouch I picked up at Gap Outlet last summer. It has two zippered compartments-- one for clean clothes and one for dirty clothes. If you're good with a sewing machine you could make one for yourself. I've seen these on Etsy in case you want to buy one.
My curly hair is high maintenance, thus the hair brush, hair gel, two kinds of hair spray, and hair dryer with a diffuser attachment. Whew. Did I mention I'm not a light packer?
I like to keep my hair dryer in a tote bag while traveling to keep any hair styling product residue off my clothes.
In order to keep dirt off my clothes, I put my shoes in grocery bags. Not fancy but still effective. To save space, I put my shoes together how most shoes come in the box you buy them in-- putting opposite ends of the shoes together.
I'm a big fan of the rolling technique when it comes to clothes. It saves space and helps minimize wrinkles.
Packing a suitcase is like Tetris to me. I typically start my putting my largest item in first, which is always my biggest toiletry bag. Then I put in my clothes, followed by my shoes, hair dryer, other toiletry bag, roll up jewelry organizer, and undergarment pouch. I store any additional accessories, like my clutch, pashmina, and scarf in the zippered top portion of the suitcase.
Since it's kind of hard to tell from the photos, I thought I'd take everything out to show you how much I fit inside my 26" x 17" x 8" suitcase. I ended up with enough clothes for at least 5 days: 3 dresses, 2 tops, 3 bottoms, 1 blazer, 1 sweater, 1 pair of pajamas, undergarments, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 clutch, 2 pashminas/scarves, and all of my toiletries and jewelry.
Some of you may ask where my makeup bag is. I completely forgot to throw it in the suitcase for these photos because I tend to put my makeup bag in my carry-on, but it could have fit in my suitcase.
I hope you found some of these tips and tricks to be helpful when packing your suitcase. Happy travels!
Do you use any of my packing techniques? Do you have any tips or tricks you'd like to share?
